Maisonneuve Library Competition
Montreal, QC

Chevalier Morales was one of the four finalist firms in the architectural competition for the modernization of the Maisonneuve Library, located in the historic City Hall of the Old Maisonneuve borough. The proposal aimed to restore the 1912 building, enhancing its heritage value by removing elements detracting from its architectural integrity and by restoring original materials such as flooring, bronze doors, skylights, and moldings. Situated in the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve neighbourhood, the library is integrated with the area's vibrant social initiatives.

Inspired by the City Beautiful movement, the proposal reimagines the library as a street-like building that seamlessly integrates with its surrounding urban landscape. A dynamic space where ideas intersect and evolve into new perspectives, its design emphasizes movement, lightness, openness, and transparency. The project includes the creation of a landscaped pedestrian avenue between Ontario Street and the heritage building, offering an alternative path filled with opportunities for exploration or strolls, including relaxation areas, benches, Adirondack chairs, and activities organized by the library.

In an era dominated by social media, instant access to information, and the rise in popularity of digital content, cultural spaces must evolve to accommodate new methods of learning, communication, and creation. Conceptualized as a third space, Maisonneuve Library hosts a range of experiences, with adaptable and multifunctional spaces that enable users to create content almost instantly through various technological interfaces.
