Drummondville Public Library
Drummondville, QC
The new Drummondville Public Library stands out as a building that quickly became an integral part of residents’ daily lives. As a gathering place where paths, passions, and ideas converge, the library fulfills the fundamental need for community and collective growth.
Designed as part of an architectural competition, the project integrates an outdoor skating rink envisioned as an extension of the library’s original program. Aware of the significance of hockey culture for residents, the project embodies an urban meeting point that reflects its community.
Going beyond the framework of a traditional library, its design invites users to engage with the space in their own way, whether by playing hockey outdoors, borrowing books after a game, or studying in a beautifully unique environment. Located near the terminus where converge the main public transport networks, it acts as a considerable attraction in the downtown area for the surrounding streets and businesses.
The project’s environmental focus is evident in the innovative design of an energy loop that connects the library to the adjacent skating rink, optimizing energy costs for both spaces through an efficient cyclical energy transfer lasting nearly six months.
