Saul-Bellow Library 10th Anniversary: A Decade of Architectural Excellence in Montreal
This spring, the Saul-Bellow Library in Lachine will celebrate its 10th anniversary. A significant milestone for both the library and Chevalier Morales, this project embodies the firm’s commitment to designing innovative and timeless community-focused spaces.
Over a decade ago, Chevalier Morales participated in an architectural competition held by the city of Montreal for the former library expansion and renovation, built in 1974. The renovation transformed the library into a modern and flexible space, introducing new shelving units, a café, video and board game spaces, and multifunctional rooms. The design enhances the space by incorporating abundant natural light and offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape and nearby Patterson Park.

Shaping the Future of Montreal Libraries
The Saul-Bellow Library renovation is a keystone in Chevalier Morales' portfolio, marking one of the firm’s first built projects initiated through an architectural competition. As a contemporary 21st-century library, it embodies a dynamic third place, offering a variety of spaces where residents of all ages can engage in research, learning, entertainment, and relaxation. By blending modern design elements with the library's built heritage, Chevalier Morales created a welcoming environment that fosters community connections and intellectual growth. The Saul-Bellow Library transformation reflects the evolving needs of Montreal’s public spaces while preserving the building’s historical significance.

Building for Stronger Communities
This renovation exemplifies Chevalier Morales’ expertise in adaptive reuse, sustainable design, and creating spaces that encourage community interaction. With its innovative features and timeless design, the Saul-Bellow Library will continue to inspire discovery and learning for future generations. To a decade of creativity, innovation, and growth at the Saul-Bellow Library!
