Twenty Years of Excellence for Chevalier Morales
This April, Chevalier Morales will celebrate two decades of existence. This step represents a milestone for our firm, which has distinguished itself for its architectural innovation, dedication, and ability to create exceptional community spaces over the past twenty years. Founded in 2005 in Montreal by Stephan Chevalier and Sergio Morales, Chevalier Morales has become a cornerstone of Quebec’s architectural landscape.
Our firm was born from a shared vision: to create architecture that embodies a profound sense of social and environmental responsibility, deeply rooted in its surrounding context. Today, our firm creates spaces that embody contemporary architectural visions and respond to the pressing social, environmental, and cultural needs of our time, remaining ever-vigilant to the challenges that lie ahead. This vision has catalyzed the firm’s growth and success, guiding our efforts to design sustainable, high-quality spaces.
At Chevalier Morales, our philosophy goes beyond the concept of aesthetics. We view architecture as a vector for social change and environmental responsibility, prioritizing a sustainable approach that maximizes the positive impact of our interventions within a community - environmentally and culturally. This commitment is rooted in our desire to create architectural solutions that address current environmental challenges while anticipating the realities of future generations. Our team is acutely aware of its responsibility to weave these social considerations into its practice from the outset of every project.
Projects That Have Shaped the Firm’s Legacy
Many years ago, Chevalier Morales’ young and emerging team began to carve out its place in Quebec’s architectural community as it was selected as a finalist in the competition for the new Montreal Planetarium. This defining moment, coupled with years of unwavering dedication, passion, and hard work, laid the foundation for our firm’s steady growth and pushed it to rise as a key player in Quebec’s architectural landscape. Today, Chevalier Morales is home to a team of nearly 50 exceptional professionals whose invaluable contributions have enabled us to bring to life hundreds of remarkable projects, celebrated and recognized by peers and the community.
Over the years, Chevalier Morales has completed numerous large-scale projects, each distinguished by the uniqueness of their design. Among these is the Maison de la littérature in Old Quebec, a brilliant testimony to the firm’s commitment to innovation and heritage preservation. The project originally aimed to renovate the Wesley Temple (1848), a neo-Gothic heritage building. During the first stage of the competition, our team boldly proposed the addition of a glass-and-steel annex adjacent to the restored temple, aiming to free up space by externalizing part of the program. A true haven dedicated to literary life, the Maison de la littérature represents a unique cultural concept in North America. The project was recognized by the architectural community, receiving a Governor General’s Medal in Architecture from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and a Grand Prix d’excellence and an Excellence Award from the Ordre des architectes du Québec.
Since this iconic project, our firm has made a profound impact on Quebec's cultural landscape through the realization of numerous distinctive works, including the Pierrefonds and Drummondville libraries, the Agora des Arts in Rouyn-Noranda, and the Fabrique de théâtre insolite of Les Sages Fous in Trois-Rivières. Moreover, Chevalier Morales was recently named a finalist for Canada’s official representation at the 18th Venice Biennale of Architecture, underscoring our firm’s presence on the international stage and our unwavering commitment to cultivating the field. Over the years, our expertise has grown to encompass a range of sectors, from education and institutional to commercial and residential projects.
Today, we continue to broaden our perspectives through our work on many projects across diverse sectors, including the new Saskatoon Central Library, the Mont-Laurier Library, the sustainable renovation of Fondaction’s offices, and the construction of 230 Notre-Dame West, a new multi-residential building in the historic district of Old Montreal.
The Chevalier Morales Team: A Fusion of Talent
The diversity and dedication of the Chevalier Morales team play a crucial role in the firm's success. Formed by architects, project managers, and talented collaborators, our team is the driving force behind our ongoing innovation and unwavering commitment to excellence. The unique expertise of each member, united by a shared passion for architecture, profoundly enriches our work, allowing us to surpass the expectations of our clients.
Chevalier Morales’ involvement in higher education underscores our dedication to passing on knowledge and nurturing the next generation of architects. Several team members, including Mr. Morales and Mr. Chevalier, actively contribute to the education of future leaders in the field, frequently serving on juries for student reviews, architecture awards and competitions. By being invited to deliver lectures, presenting the firm’s projects, and publishing their work, members broaden our influence on the international stage. This engagement reflects our deep commitment to fostering a rich dialogue around architecture while contributing to the success of a new generation of creators.
Looking Forward: The Future of Chevalier Morales
As we stand on the threshold of our twentieth anniversary, Chevalier Morales turns its gaze toward the future. As the world of architecture evolves, the firm remains steadfast in its commitment to research and innovation. Our firm’s ability to adapt to emerging trends and technologies allows it to push the boundaries of architectural creation, integrating contemporary technologies, increasingly sustainable materials, and innovative design methods. We are dedicated to shaping spaces that meet today’s needs while anticipating those of tomorrow. We aim to create environments that inspire, sustain, and strengthen communities by offering sustainable solutions that honour and protect the planet.
On this special occasion, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our partners, clients, and collaborators, whose invaluable support has helped shape our journey over the past twenty years.
